Dani Love Interview: Female Voice Behind Nelly's "Hot In Herre" Discusses New Single "Take Your Girl"

Singer-songwriter DANI LOVE was first introduced on Nelly's Grammy Award-winning No. 1 crossover Hit "Hot In Herre" and soon-after released her single "Honk Your Horn" which featured Missy Elliott and "Yo, Yo, Yo" for the Blockbuster film XXX and it's accompanied soundtrack. After label and production company disputes and eventually parting ways, Dani returns after a musical hiatus with a new single "Take Your Girl" from her upcoming EP A Lover & A Fighter.

TERRANCE: Describe your personality in three words.

DANI LOVE: I would say bubbly, outgoing and passionate.

TERRANCE: Can you share with us a little about how you were discovered and signed into the music industry?

DANI LOVE: Well, I was discovered a long time ago. I was with a production company at that time, so through the production company I got a deal with Universal back in 2002. I worked with Nelly on "Hot In Herre". That's pretty much how I got discovered.

TERRANCE: Who were your musical influences coming along and who continue to influence you?

DANI LOVE: Anita Baker, Billie Holiday, Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill, Whitney Houston. I mean, I could go on and on. All the great singers I love. I also listen to a lot of groups TLC, Jodeci. I still listen to Mary to this day, she never gets old.

TERRANCE: Talk about your new single "Take Your Girl" and how it came about.

DANI LOVE: "Take Your Girl" is about a relationship gone bad. The girl is cheated on by her boyfriend and she go through all of the emotions of it. As women, we can get down on ourselves when something like that tragic happens to you. So instead of getting down on myself, I realize, okay, I'm fly and I didn't do anything wrong and I'm just going to take the high road. I love myself and as a matter of fact, I'm that confident in myself that at the end of the day, I can take your girl too. That's pretty much the concept of the song.

TERRANCE: That's quite interesting. So can we expect a visual?

DANI LOVE: There will be a visual. Soon to follow.

TERRANCE: How did you come up with the title for your upcoming EP, A Lover & A Fighter?

DANI LOVE: Basically, it's just telling my story of relationships, life and my experiences in the industry. I've been grinding for a long time and the EP is my story. The ups and the down. I can be both a lover and a fighter.

TERRANCE: Sonically what can we expect on the EP?

DANI LOVE: It has a lot of elements. It's definitely R&B with some Hip Hop and some Pop, but they are all catchy songs.

TERRANCE: How did your session on Nelly's "Hot In Herre" come about?

DANI LOVE: That came about through a mutual relationship with the label and my producer at the time. He knew someone in Nelly's camp and they wanted me to come. It was a really last minute thing. My producer called and told me to come down and do this song and it was that simple. I was in the studio with Nelly and Pharrell. They had the hook already written and we knocked it out and they put it out in a matter of days and it blew up.

TERRANCE: Where were you and what was your reaction when you first heard it on the radio?

DANI LOVE: When I first heard it on the radio, I was hanging with my girls. I think we were actually going to a club in the city and I was like, Oh My God! I'm on the radio (Laughs). So yeah, it was that kind of reaction. I was excited.

TERRANCE: What are your thoughts on colorism in the music industry?

DANI LOVE: It's always something, you know? As people of color, we've built that in our community unfortunately, but there's always going to be something. That's just life. You can't let things like that hold you back. I'm just speaking generically, I guess. I wish it didn't exist, but coming from my history and this country and our culture and everything, it does unfortunately. You can't just let it continue to put you down and get in your way. It's a matter of how you pick up, react to it and deal with it.

TERRANCE: Any final words you would like to share?

DANI LOVE: Yes. To all of those who've waited so long, I really appreciate you guys, because I know I have fans out there who have been asking, where has she been? I'm just excited and I'm still here, I just want you all to know. Check for my new single "Take Your Girl". Check for the new EP that's coming out called, A Lover & A Fighter and just rock with me y'all, because we're gonna do it up this time. This is it.
