In Retrospect: Whitney Houston - ‘Just Whitney…’ turns 15

Grammy Award-winning vocalist Whitney Houston released her fifth LP Just Whitney… via Arista in her illustrious career on this day 15 years ago in music.

Described by Houston as the album of survival, raising a family, being a wife or girlfriend and all the challenges that go along with those things. Just Whitney… debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard 200’s charts giving her then biggest opening first week sales.

The first release for Houston under the guidance of L.A. Reid after Clive Davis moved on to J Records seen a shift in direction sonically giving more Urban/R&B flair (“One of Those Days”, “Things You Say”, “Dear John Letter”) in contrast to previous offerings.
However one thing remained intact was Houston’s remarkable vocal talent
(“Unashamed”, “Try It On My Own”).

Production for the album was handled by Houston herself along with longtime collaborator Babyface, Missy Elliott, Teddy Bishop, Gordon Chambers,
Kevin Briggs and Troy Taylor.
