Interview: Jeff Sanders & Buddy Wike of INTRO talks 30th Anniversary of Debut Album, Kenny Greene & More

Brooklyn, New York-based R&B group Intro which originally consisted of members Kenny Greene, Jeff Sanders and Clinton 'Buddy' Wike burst on the scene 30 years ago with their Gold-selling self-titled debut album which spawned their top 10 hit single "Come Inside". The album scored several other successful singles "Let Me Be the One" and "Love Thang" both reaching the top 30 in the R&B charts as well as a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Ribbon In the Sky" that managed to reach No. 11 on the R&B charts. The trio released a second album entitled New Life in 1995 which features the top 30 R&B hit "Funny How Time Flies" as well as charting single "Feels Like the First Time". Lead singer Kenny Greene continued writing for the likes of Mary J. Blige, Will Smith, 98 Degrees, Soul for Real, Christopher Williams and more. Unfortunately, Greene passed away in 2001. RnBJunkieOfficial caught up with remaining members Jeff Sanders and Buddy Wike for an exclusive to discuss all things Intro. Come Inside...

TERRANCE: This year marks the 30th Anniversary of Intro's debut album. Are there any fond memories you could share about creating that album?

BUDDY WIKE: I remember waking up in the middle of the night and Jeff was in the vocal booth with this girl doing the end of the "Come Inside" record. As far as all of the records, they are memorable and everybody came in and did what they did talentwise, but if you had to put your finger on one particular thing that happened, like the end of that record. Waking up and hearing all of these noises going on in the studio. It sounded like someone was lying right next to me on the next couch and that's because it was coming out of the speakers.

JEFF SANDERS: So yeah, there's a skit at the end of "Come Inside" that the producer Nevelle Hodge wanted. It was almost like that Guy record "Tease Me" and there was a scene where Aaron Hall was having sex on that record. The producer wanted something like that, so I called this girl that I knew that I was dating in the past, but she was still an active stripper. I called her in and I said, listen I need for us to make up a scene. When we first did it, we were pretty much acting it out and it didn't sound right. It sounded really fake, so I asked the producer if we could dim the lights and close the curtains on the booth and let us do our thing? At the time, it was the engineer and the producer. Buddy and Kenny I believe, were in the lounge taking a nap. So, me and the girl just went to work. Real sex and it came out perfect.

TERRANCE: And speaking of "Come Inside". Where were you and what were your reactions when you first heard it on the radio?

BUDDY WIKE: Wow. I was at home with the window open and a car drove by and I heard it. I said, they must have gotten a copy of the tape or demo, so I didn't pay it no mind. Then later on in the day about two hours later I heard it again outside of my house. I said, this song's gotta be on the radio. I turned the radio on and it was on.

JEFF SANDERS: When I first heard it, neither my parents nor my family believed me. They were like, yeah right. I was like, okay. I was so nonchalant about it. They couldn't believe it after they found out it was us.

TERRANCE: You guys did an impressive cover of Stevie Wonder's "Ribbon In the Sky" on the album.

JEFF SANDERS: We were first introduced to the idea of covering that song by our A&R Tim Dawg Patterson. I can remember that I automatically rejected it in my head. Like, ain't no freakin' way. Nobody touches Stevie Wonder. Even Kenny and Buddy both felt that way about the idea. Who the hell is going to mess with a Stevie song? But when Nevelle did the track and Kenny laid down his first note, I'm not going to lie to you, I said, oh we might have something here.

TERRANCE: So, did Stevie ever reach out or meet you guys?

BUDDY WIKE: We did meet him, but I almost missed him because I had came back to New York after we finished filming the video. As soon as I walk in the house, my mom tells me that Kenny called and to give him a call at the hotel. I called him at the hotel and he said, you shouldn't have left because tomorrow we're going to meet Stevie Wonder. So, I was able to get back to the airport that night to get back to the hotel the next morning. And sure enough, we went to Stevie's house and we spent the whole day hanging out with him. We called over some friends like Terence Trent D'Arby and Johnny Gill to spend the day with us and we ended up recording a song and celebrating Kenny's birthday. It was a great experience to just be there with Stevie Wonder.

TERRANCE: Are there any personal favorites or standout songs from that album?

JEFF SANDERS: My personal favorite probably will always be "Don't Leave Me". I think there's something melodic about that track that touches my soul. From the music being created to the song being recorded and the whole element of that song I will never forget. That feeling will always stick with me, so that's why I love that song.

BUDDY WIKE: Yeah, we share the same song. As far as one of the greatest misses, "Don't Leave Me" was supposed to follow after "Ribbon In the Sky" but this was when record companies had a schedule that they had to stick by and these dates when they are going to release records, so when it was time to release "Don't Leave Me", they wanted us to go back in and just do a whole 'nother album. You haven't heard the last of "Don't Leave Me". I promise you.

TERRANCE: There is a second album, New Life. Are there any personal favorites or standout songs from that album?

BUDDY WIKE: Probably "My Love's On the Way".

JEFF SANDERS: I would say "Strung Out On Your Lovin'" and "Feels Like the First Time". "Feels Like the First Time" was probably one of the prettiest records on the second album and I've heard that from many fans and I could agree. The elements of that record were definitely something catchy.

TERRANCE: You guys were recently featured on Eric Roberson's song and video for "All I Want". How did that come about?

JEFF SANDERS: I met Eric Roberson back in 2014 in Minneapolis. At the time I was in a relationship with a young lady in Minneapolis and we went to an event that he was performing at. The actual manager of the club knew I was in there and he mentioned me on the mic that we got Jeff Sanders from Intro, and one of his band members said, Eric wants to meet you. I didn't know he was such a big fan, like he broke down everything. He was telling me how he was in college and he actually had Intro as a blueprint of his writing and how he loved Intro so much. He was really going in. We had a great time just talking about all of that and how he really, really studied Kenny's writing and paid attention to his skill set. So, we exchanged numbers and occasionally we'd talk here and there. Then one of our other friends Rashad Smith who used to be Erykah Badu's director, actually called us up and said, yo' you know who sounds like Kenny a lot and reminds me of Kenny? We said, who? He said Eric Roberson would be a good fit for y'all. At the time, we were going to come together to do an album, but due to scheduling, things just weren't aligned. But, Eric still wanted to work with us. Originally I was told from him that he thought of two groups Intro and SWV, but after thinking about it, he said, I gotta go with Intro on this record.

BUDDY WIKE: We went out to his house to discuss putting the record on our 25th anniversary album, but the 25th anniversary album didn't turn into an album, it ended up just pretty much being a playlist that was released during Black Music Month. So, when it was time for him to go do his album, he called us again and said, hey I'm working on a new album and let's do the song and put it on this album. We went out to his studio and then about two weeks later we went back out to film the video and next thing I know, I'm watching the video on BET.

TERRANCE: From your perspective, what are some things people could learn about Kenny Greene and his musical contributions?

BUDDY WIKE: I think Kenny pretty much contributed a little bit to every genre during his writing years. I feel he was one of the best songwriters I've ever encountered and he just never ceased to amaze me. He just kept going and going. Even though I was in the group, I was constantly being entertained and learning at the same time. You had to be around him to witness it. He could write a song so fast, man. I knew going into the studio, the song was going to pretty much be written and I never had a problem with that. I was like, this is just going to be dope and it's going to follow us. He was a really cool guy. God rest his soul.

TERRANCE: Are there any upcoming events or projects you could tell us about?

BUDDY WIKE: Well, we're still putting together our 30th anniversary package. So, we kinda like slowed down on our dates but we will pop back out for a few dates around Easter time, I think.

TERRANCE: Any final words you would like to share with your fans, followers, listeners and the readers?

BUDDY WIKE: This interview was so nice and smooth, man. But I just want to say look out for Intro and the 30th anniversary.

RnBJunkieOfficial caught up with Tanya Nolan for an exclusive interview to discuss her most recent single "Pace Yourself" featuring Raheem DeVaughn, Upcoming projects and much more. "Pace Yourself" is available on all streaming and digital music platforms.

TERRANCE: In three words describe your personality.

TANYA NOLAN: Oh my God, you're the first person to ever ask me that and you're about to make me think. *Laughs*. I will tell you, I know that I am full of magic and some people may not understand what that means, but the right people know exactly what I mean by that. That's one thing. I know that I'm different. I'm a go-getter and a hustler. It's like I don't want to disappoint myself, so it's important for me to achieve my goal. And I love people who love me back and I love them even moreso. You know how you have so many people in this industry and in this world that just don't have any sense of integrity and they just simply don't give a f&#%. They're not concerned about the consequences. I'm concerned about the consequences, so I try to be fair and treat people with love, especially the ones that are deserving of it. That's how I can describe myself and I know that I'm talented and a businesswoman. I'm about my business. I'm loving and I try to keep my circle really, really small because of my kindness. People will try to take advantage of that and see it as being gullible and it's not. It's just part of who I am and part of my DNA, so I have to be cautious and very careful of that. So, that's why my circle is really, really small. That's me.

TERRANCE: Talk about where you're from and when you realized your gift for music.

TANYA NOLAN: Absolutely. So, I'm from Galveston, TX. It's an island in Texas. Basically when it comes to just how I fell upon music, I was 15 and I wanted to make some extra money. I asked my mom if I could get a job and she quickly said, yes. She handed me the Galveston newspaper. There was an ad in the newspaper looking for a female vocalist. I called the number and I auditioned over the phone and he was like, okay how old are you? And I was like, I'm 15 sir, and he was like, well I need to speak to your guardian. So, he got on the phone with my mom and she brought me to a rehearsal and that's how it started. So, music pretty much found me. I had no idea that I could sing. Most people would be like, did you start in the Church? I'm like, no I didn't start in the Church. So, that's how that happened. It still blows my mind like, am I really doing this? Is this really real? I'll pinch myself every once in a while and I'm like, this is real. It's magical to me that it found me and I'm thankful that it did.

TERRANCE: Growing up, who were your musical influences?

TANYA NOLAN: Well, some of the individuals that I admire are Minnie Riperton. I did a cover of "Lovin' You" and I named it "The Bird Song" and it's on spotify and youtube. But Minnie Riperton, Teddy Pendergrass, The Bee Gee's, Earth Wind & Fire, Anita Baker, ConFunkShun, The Brothers Johnson, Phil Collins, George Michael, Michael Jackson, Prince. I love real music when you can hear real instruments and not just a beat. It takes more than just a beat.

TERRANCE: What's the inspiration behind your latest single "Pace Yourself" with Raheem DeVaughn?

TANYA NOLAN: The song is pretty much about, they love one another and they show it by intimacy and things like that. It's pretty much a love song. So, if you listen to the lyrics, it basically tells you exactly what it's about, but when it was brought to my attention about the record, I instantly was like, man I gotta get up on that. I was honored and we went with it. Raheem is super talented and it's actually one of my favorites. I definitely have it on my playlist on spotify and a few other areas and it's doing pretty well right now. Radio has some good news. Pandora and Shazam are pretty awesome, so I'm liking the movement.

TERRANCE: Can we expect a visual for that song anytime soon?

TANYA NOLAN: Absolutely. The visual treatment is done and we've shot the video. I had some hands on when it came to that treatment, so it's going to be spicy, sensuous but tasteful with an edge. It's definitely gonna make you use your imagination.

TERRANCE: What was it like hooking up with CeeLo Green for the "My Best" Remix?

TANYA NOLAN: Oh God. CeeLo. That dude is funny. OMG. It was rewarding and I learned quite a bit from him. We keep in touch like he'll send me a text every once in a while and I'm like, is this CeeLo? And so, one time he called and I missed his call and he called back and I finally answered and he was like, girl you better be excited to hear from me. *Laughs*. He's someone to know and he guided me in some ways when it comes to how to deal in this industry because being in this industry is not for the weak.

TERRANCE: Will there be a follow-up album, EP or singles your focus at the moment?

TANYA NOLAN: Oh absolutely. Me and my team are planning on putting out an EP real soon. We're definitely going to be putting out singles for the DSP's, but I do have an album that's coming out this year and I'm hoping for the first quarter. I just got about six or eight more tunes to get in the studio and record, so I can go ahead and have a listening party or something like that, because at first I was like, I'm gonna pick out my own stuff, but my team convinced me not to do that and they told me why. I really have about 100, but there are 50 strong one's I know for sure and out of that, we're gonna pick out maybe 12 to 15 tunes.

TERRANCE: The current climate of R&B music, what are your thoughts?

TANYA NOLAN: R&B never left. It's been there. It's just that, you know how when it comes to TV, how certain people control the media. Controls what you watch, what you see, what you hear. Now people are like, I'm tired of hearing this riff-raff, like what happened? Like Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak came out with ConFunkShun's "Love's Train". Like I told you, I'm a big fan of ConFunkShun. So, it's here and I'm here. I know that I'm not just R&B, but I know what real R&B is and that's the lane I'm driving in right now and I'm in control of the wheel. R&B is here and it's needed. It's soulful and it's real. Just like they're talking about this Alternative or whatever it is when it comes to music. It doesn't have a soul, so it's not going to be real R&B. I'm curious to know what that's going to be about, but one thing I do know is that it doesn't have a soul. Where's the feeling? R&B is here, it's not going anywhere and I know when it comes to this genre of music, in some people's eyes it's looked down on and think about why, because it's black. Period.

TERRANCE: When you're not working in the world of entertainment, what do you enjoy the most?

TANYA NOLAN: Ooh, that's easy. I enjoy a nice book with something hot to drink. I like watching TV and I'm mindful of what I watch. I like to do that and relax and have my phone where it's just not ringing and ringing and ringing without any disturbance or simply sitting on my porch with my feet kicked up and just being in tune with nature. I'm very country and I like the Earth and being bare feet. I'll put my feet in the dirt real quick and just get in tune and talk to my creator often, because I'm grateful. But, those are some of the things I do. I actually love me and take time with myself and I talk to Tanya and I answer myself back to. Some people may think that it's crazy, but it is not. It's very healthy. Think about it, you are everywhere you go. Don't you think it's in your best interest to know yourself and to love yourself and to love who you are and to fix the things you don't like. I choose to write my own story and I look forward to it. I want to see it manifest. I challenge myself, even sometimes when I go to bed at night, I'm like, damn what am I going to dream about tonight? That's me.

TERRANCE: What advice would you give to those who aspire to do what you do?

TANYA NOLAN: Know who you are. Believe that you can do it. Don't expect anyone to invest in you if you're not willing to invest in yourself. And keep it pushing. Be disciplined. Know what you want and be clear on that. But most importantly, mind your damn business, because you got things to do. Focus on you and stay out of other people's business and be careful about your surroundings and the people that you associate with. You want team members that want to see you win. Pay attention to the signs and get your proper rest. Don't let nobody tell you, man I'mma sleep when I'm dead. Naw, if you don't get your rest, you're gonna be dead sooner than you expected. So, you gotta have your rest so you can be more productive, because you're not your best when you're sleepy and tired. That makes no sense. And here's one more thing, use your damn common sense. If you feel you're lacking in common sense, ask the creator to give you some mercy and give it to you because you need it to be in this industry. Again, keep it pushing. Straight tunnel. Straight ahead. Focus on you and your craft. How bad do you want it? That is my advice.

"It's been an incredible start to the year. My wife, Faith, and I just welcomed a baby girl two weeks ago and now I have another #1 song. I remember when "For You" was #1 for ten consecutive weeks and how validating that felt. Now, after a career spanning 25 plus years to be back at #1, I'm truly grateful. My album title really spoke truth to power – I’m here to stayI want to thank all the radio stations, streaming media and fans who have supported me on this journey to "Take A Dose" reaching #1This is also the first time I've had two songs simultaneously on the various charts with the second one being, "Why Oh Why" with Artists for Global Unity, already charting in the Top 30's also on Billboard." -Kenny Lattimore

Donna Summer's Documentary "Love to Love You, Donna Summer" Is Coming to HBO

The upcoming HBO Original documentary "Love To Love You, Donna Summer", directed by Oscar and Emmy-winning filmmaker Roger Ross Williams and Brooklyn Sudano, daughter of Donna Summer, debuts in May on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

Shaped by Donna Summer’s own reflections, the memories of close family, friends and colleagues, and filled with the sounds of her songs, “Love To Love You, Donna Summer” is an in-depth look at the iconic artist as she creates music that takes her from the avant-garde music scene in Germany, to the glitter and bright lights of dance clubs in New York, to worldwide acclaim, her voice and artistry becoming the defining soundtrack of an era.

A deeply personal portrait of Donna Summer on and off the stage, the film features a wealth of photographs and never-before-seen home video footage - often shot by Summer herself - and provides a rich window into the surprising range of her artistry, from songwriting to painting, while exploring the highs and lows of a life lived on the global stage.
